Yes folks, for those of us that have been around long enough to remember this "shaking your hips" song at its release, we are that old. Many may have found this was the first time the name Ricky Martin had come into his or her life. For others, like me, we knew of him as a teenage heartthrob with the boy band Menudo.
I fondly remember the Ricky Martin craze that was to follow the release of this song. We were all "Livin' La Vida Loca" along with him. It was the perfect song at the perfect time in my life, I was a full-time working new mom. This song was catchy and fun to dance to. It made the world disappear for a little while, as you danced and sang along. Reminding you that we were all "Livin' La Vida Loca."
I resided in Los Angeles at that time and this song was always on the radio. Both English and Spanish stations alike were playing it. Many hits followed, however, this was the beginning of making Martin a household name. His concert tour that followed, in Los Angeles specifically, sold out in five minutes. I was lucky enough to score a ticket, although a nosebleed seat, the show was incredible and showcased him as an amazing entertainer.
Martin solidified himself as a crossover singer with this album. His catchy song writing, devilishly handsome good looks, and spicy salsa moves made him the perfect vessel to pave the way for the Latin Explosion.
Today this song transports me back to the time when my daughter, who will be 26 this year, was a baby and I would hold her in my arms and dance around the house with her. Good times, good memories, and an amazing song to sync them to.
