As hellacious as they are, AVATARJohannes Eckerström on vocals, Jonas Jarlsby on guitars, Tim Brström on bass, Henrik Sandelin on drums, and John Alfredsson on drums — are having a banner year in 2023.

Their first #1 single is "The Dirt I'm Buried In" from their magnum opus and ninth album, Dance Devil Dance, produced and mixed by Jay Ruston. As reported by Mediabase, the track has risen to the top of the Active Rock Chart. Despite its 31-week wait, the single climbs to #1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart, making it the longest trek to #1 in 20 years!

"If you told the 16 year old me that we would hit the top of the U.S. radio charts, I'd ask you what you're smoking. If you then would proceed to tell me that a fossil would be named after us, I'd ask you what you're smoking, and if you could share. Hitting the charts was never a priority, but now that we're here, I'm grateful. It shows the reach of what we're doing and it is baffling. The fossil shows something else. That to me is a sign of people truly making our music a part of their lives. It's a true honor. A beautiful gift. All we can say is thank you. We fully intend to keep earning your participation, over and over again,"

-Johannes Eckerström.

Paleontologist Dr. Ben Thuy of the Luxembourg Natural History Museum discovered Avatar in the fossil record of Southern Sweden. Ophiocoma avatar is now the name given to this fossil.

A subtropical sea surrounded southern Sweden 80 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the planet. There is one location at Ivö Klack where the fossil record preserves an exceptional palaeo-environment: the rocky shore encrusted with oysters. There are fossil remains of animals that lived around the rocky shore millions of years ago in the mud that accumulated between the boulders. One of these animals is the brittle star named after Avatar: Ophiocoma Avatar.

Brittle star skeletons tend to fall apart very quickly after death. As a result, most brittle-star fossils consist of tiny skeletal fragments that are collected with the sieve. The original fossil of Ophiocoma avatar is a fragment from the arm skeleton that carried the long arm spines. There is a group of brittle stars known as Avatar brittle stars that live on tropical and subtropical shores today. The spiny arms of these creatures are used to collect food particles and hide under rocks and crevasses during the day. Most Ophiocoma species are capable of sight without eyes or brains, an amazing characteristic! As part of their sunglass effect, some of them can see through their entire body surface during the day and at night.Based on fossils alone, it is impossible to determine whether Avatar brittle stars shared the same characteristics. What we can say, however, is that Ophiocoma avatar is by far the oldest known representative of this exciting group of brittle stars.
