Chelsea Wolfe is an American singer-songwriter from Sacramento, California. Her work is a blend of rock, goth, and a little doom mixed in. Her music explores the darker inner workings of the mind. She set out on tour in late February to support her newest album "She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She".
Chelsea Wolfe's performance was a hauntingly beautiful experience that left the audience captivated and in awe. Her ethereal voice filled the tiny venue with its raw power and emotion, drawing listeners in with its haunting melodies and dark lyrics.
The crowd roared as she slowly began to reveal herself to the audience. She appears ethereal on stage, her face barely lit, most of the stage lighting coming from behind and around her, but never in front. Smoke filled the air as she emerged from behind the curtains, into the light.
Chelsea played the entirety of her newest album "She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She" and many songs from her previous albums.
The crowd, all clad in black, somberly danced along to her haunting tunes. Many raised their hands in an almost praising fashion. I had the chance to chat with a few audience members. I had not heard of Chelsea before this show so I decided to ask about this elusive artist. Many described Chelsea as a "Goth Mom" and a "Witchy Goddess"
The encore of the show was a single song. Chelsea entered the stage with an acoustic guitar and began to play. "The Liminal" is a song heavily influenced by trip-hop. When she finished the song, she stepped off stage unceremoniously to the crowd's applause drowning out her final words.
As much as this show was not my cup of tea, Chelsea Wolfe's connection with the crowd is palpable and their support for her musical endeavors goes beyond what the ear can hear. I had the opportunity to speak to so many wonderful audience members who all shared their experiences of discovering Wolfe's music. Whether in a time of darkness or jubilance, Wolfe's compositions have made a lasting impact on listeners worldwide, ultimately, I found the crowd to be a refreshing divergence from the typical metal shows I attend.
