Julie, a shoegaze rock band from and formed in California, opened for Faye Webster during her “Underdressed at the Symphony” tour. I was interested to see how the crowd would react given how different their style is to Faye’s dreamlike, jazzier style of indie rock. There were people more hesitant to their music, however, I was able to see people going word for word, dancing all the way to the back and moshing in the pit. It was great to see that even though the opener had a different style, there were still people that enjoyed the diversity.
Faye Webster
Even before Faye Webster and her band came on, the crowd was going wild. While they were testing the lights, fans were cheering on the lighting crew. As the lights dimmed once the crew was ready, Minions from the Despicable Me universe crowded the screen. Members of the crowd held up phones of Minions reflecting the vibe of the opening sequence. When the lights came up, fans could see the stage covered in washing machines and a giant t-shirt that the opening sequence was projected onto.
Faye Webster’s music feels like you are having a pillow fight. It’s so soft, but, somehow, has the feeling of rock music I can jam out to. When she would scream in her music, it felt so light and dainty, however, her vocals and music carried past the walls of the outdoor area of Stage AE. Webster had many songs where it felt like she was building them from the ground up - starting slow the building to a crescendo.
The visuals matched the vibe of her music and new album in general. I always appreciate when an artist has a theme. You can tell she built a world around her new album and brought it to Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh crowd went ballistic for her and what she brought to the city. Webster played a good mix of songs from her albums “Atlanta Millionaires Club,” “I Know I’m Funny haha,” and her latest album “Undressed at the Symphony.” She put on a magical show this past Monday, which was a perfect start to the week.
