After 16 years of only re-recording old music Billy Joel shook the world with his announcement of a new single “Turn the Lights Back on.” The singer first alluded to the song when he made his debut on TikTok on December 20, 2023, with a video he posted of an announcement at a concert, “We have good and bad News, I have nothing new to sing you, but the good news is you don’t have to sit through something you have no idea what it is” before he went on to exclaim, “We have something new we’re working on you might hear sometime.” It wasn’t till February 4 at the 2024 Grammys that he would not only officially announce the new track, but also perform the new single in front of countless other big-name artists whom he has inspired. Not long after its release, the single took new heights as it stormed the radio and took the eighth spot on the Adult Contemporary chart for its second consecutive week, which Billy Joel hasn’t reached since his song “To Make You Feel My Love” in 1997.
With hits such as “Piano Man,” “Uptown Girl,” and “We Didn’t Start The Fire” he has ensured numerous awards and titles such as “Most Influential Artist of All Time, and a Generational Storyteller without Comparison,” and has continued to inspire countless others throughout a variety of eras through his music. He has sold 160 million albums worldwide and has emerged as “the fourth best-selling solo artist in the United States,” was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006, became MusiCares “Person of the Year” in 2023, and his Diamon Greatest Hits- Volume I and II -stands out as “The Sixth most-certifies album of all time.” His music continued to move people as he sold out Madison Square Garden in his home state of New York 100 times and even had New York declare July 18th “Billy Joel Day” this year.
The “Turn the Lights Back On” Music video, directed by Warren Fu and Freddy Wexler, used ground-breaking technology from Deep Voodoo to showcase Billy Joel Performing the beloved new ballad throughout different decades of his life. The unique single allows Joel to transition into the next chapter of his story, as he continues to take the music industry by storm.
