Jhariah starts their tour in Pittsburgh at Spirit Hall on Tuesday!

Feralcat and the Wild
Feralcat and the Wild is a local Pittsburgh progressive rock band with an eclectic sound and fantastic stage presence. They brought this energy to Spirit Hall this past Tuesday (February 27) opening for Jhariah. Frontman, Roger, describes many of their songs as “dorky” because of its references to gaming media. I love this aspect about their music. Feralcat's music uses melodic saxophone to tell a story and interact with the crowd. One of my favorite lines from their show was “Take a few steps into your brain. This one’s called Castle Song.”
PIAO
The second performer, PIAO, an artist from Toronto, rocked Spirit Hall with a completely different sound than Feralcat and the Wild. Her music ranges from pop that scratches an itch in your brain to heartfelt melodies that bring tears to your eyes. This concert was her first time in Pennyslvania and the crowd gave her a warm welcome from Pittsburgh. She said this is one of the times she felt the most comfortable performing because the “vibes are immaculate.”
PIAO mentioned her obsession with hamsters and, especially her hamster BuBu. This was very well received by the crowd and she sang a beautiful, heartfelt song about her hamster. One of my favorite parts of her set was when she said to turn to each other and tell the people around that they are proud of each other.
One of the final parts of her show was saying “icky sticky people we don’t like are like gum that loses its flavor” and I think that a great way to end her set and warm up the crowd for Jhariah.
Jhariah
Before Jhariah and their band even started, the crowd was cheering encouragement and there were murmurs of what songs were to be played. The crowd was ready to dance, listen to their melodic music that combines blues, rock, ska, and the Jhariah experience . This 22-year old musician was ready to take on the first night of their tour in Pittsburgh. He mentioned he was tired already “but we’re here and we get to play music so I’m not mad at all.”
They played a lot of new songs and the crowd loved it. The band and Jhariah themselves interacted with the crowd frequently. Building that relationship was a great way to establish connections of artist to audience. During the concert, Jhariah mentioned he was going to sit down and the crowd sat with him, enjoying his music in a contrasting mellow atmosphere. Another heartfelt crowd interaction was when they gave away a drawing the band made backstage to those who bought VIP tickets.
When they slowed things down, Jhariah hyped up guitarist, Eden, who sang a part of their one song in Spanish.
Jhariah expressed their sentiments by mentioning how everyone was so sweet, supportive, and was able to make the night special. They mentioned doing something nontraditional at the end by playing a new song and that new song rocked. Jhariah, an artist who brings the energy and connects to the crowd, is taking North America by storm!
