LP Giobbi: Revolutionizing Dance Music with a Jam Band Spirit

Writer's picture: Isabelle TaylorIsabelle Taylor

LP Giobbi is an artist who breaks the mold of traditional dance music. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Bill Evans and The Grateful Dead, she infuses spontaneous collaboration into the often pre-programmed world of electronic music. As a DJ and producer, LP Giobbi brings her jazz and classical background to life, incorporating live piano, modular electronics, and improvisation into her sets. Her goal? To become a "one-woman jam band."

Raised in the Oregon woods by two Dead Heads, LP Giobbi's connection to The Grateful Dead is a lifelong devotion transformed into a unique form of artistry. She has even coined her own genre, "Dead House," blending the improvisational spirit of The Grateful Dead with house music's infectious beats. Her 2023 remix album, Garcia, features danceable interpretations of classic Grateful Dead tracks, showcasing her ability to bridge the gap between jam band and dance music. This deep connection to her roots is also evident in her frequent tours with Dead & Co.

LP Giobbi's relentless touring schedule over the past year has solidified her presence in the dance music scene. Her emotional connection to music is highlighted every time she boards a plane, listening to the Grateful Dead’s “Brokedown Palace” and shedding tears. The song’s themes of home and rest resonate deeply with her, grounding her amid the chaos of constant travel. This poignant track closes out her forthcoming album, DOTR, where LP Giobbi makes her vocal debut with heartfelt lyrics: “Mama, mama, many worlds I’ve come/Since I first left home.”

Beyond her musical achievements, LP Giobbi is a passionate advocate for inclusivity in the music industry. In 2019, she and hermixalot co-founded Femme House, a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for women, gender-expansive, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ creatives. Inspired by her experience as the only woman in her Ableton classes, Giobbi created Femme House to offer free workshops, bootcamps, and online courses on music production. This initiative has made a significant impact, empowering underrepresented voices in the music community.

Anticipation is high for LP Giobbi’s sophomore album, DOTR, set to release on October 18 via Ninja Tune. This upcoming album promises to be a journey through LP Giobbi’s expansive musical landscape, blending her diverse influences into a cohesive and groundbreaking work.

Since her breakout in 2022, LP Giobbi has accumulated an impressive list of accolades:

  • Named DJ Mag’s Producer of the Year 2023

  • Featured as Spotify RADAR’s Artist to Watch, Amazon’s Artists to Watch, TIDAL’s Artist to Watch 2023, and NPR/Public Radio’s Favorite New Musicians of 2023

  • Toured with iconic artists like Pete Tong, Fatboy Slim, Diplo, Dead & Co, Black Coffee, and frequent collaborator Sofi Tukker

LP Giobbi is not just a DJ or a producer; she’s a visionary artist transforming the dance music landscape with her unique blend of influences and live performance ethos.
