Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners

Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners, an indie rock band from Seattle, is taking on a tour with Flipturn. Seeing them more than quadruple their numbers over the past few years fills my heart and to see them rock the House of Blues in Cleveland (after seeing them at a smaller venue last year) was a beautiful experience.  Their opening songs started slower and built into a crescendo of rock that moved the crowd.  Frontman, Mitch Cutts, opened up saying “WHAT THE F*CK IS UP CLEVELAND.”  Sharing this brought a roar from the crowd as Ricky Mitch & The Coal Miners continued taking us on a journey through their music.  They played music dating back to their first self-titled album in 2017 all the way to new, unreleased music.

Cutts expressed the sentiment that they were excited to be there and had a lot of music to play.  During one of their more popular songs, “Lake Missoula,” the band was shocked and said they “never heard it sung back to them like that.”  This comes full circle with watching them grow throughout the years from small venues to backing the House of Blues is incredibly inspiring.

Cleveland warmly welcomed first-timers at the House of Blues, flipturn, on Tuesday, March 26.  Of the many crowds I have interacted with in 2024, flipturn has had the most dedicated.  Fans waited outside for hours to be at the barricade, brought flipturn bracelets (me being the proud owner of one a fan graciously gifted me), and brought crazy energy when they came on.  Hands were raised and people were going bar for bar with frontman, Dillon Basse.

Though they played banger after banger, flipturn slowed down with ambient acoustic songs as well.

The members of Flipturn loved the crowd and the crowd loved them. During part of their set, drummer, Devon VonBalson, took his snare out to the crowd. He played right in front of the barricade.  Being at the barricade after waiting hours for one of your favorite bands just to see the drummer play right in front of you would be a beautiful experience.  Not to mention, there were fantastic visuals and a great stage presence. After VonBalson finished, he put the drum on his head, which got a kick out of the crowd (pictured below).

It wouldn’t be a well-rounded show without an encore.  Flipturn’s included a killer cover of “Reptilia” by the Strokes, a brand new song, and a song off their 2018 EP “Citrona.”  This ended the night with a bang as they neared the halfway point of their tour.  Flipturn will end in their home state of Florida near the end of April, so be certain to catch them as they make their way through North America.
