Matthew Dear
From the age of 16 in a small town in Texas to taking on a national tour with Thievery Corporation, Matthew Dear is a pioneer in the techno scene.
He opened the Roxian Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on mother’s Day with songs and visuals that made you feel like you were floating through space. The red and blue lights stayed a common theme throughout his set. Dear engaged with the audience as he told stories of his father, kids and more. He talked about his personal connection with Pennsylvania and guided the audience through his set with casual conversation.
The synth and techno music he performed gave a perfect platform to introduce Thievery Corporation.
Thievery Corporation
Thievery Corporation, a band spanning many genres since the ‘90s is continuing to tour in 2024. During their performance at the Roxian in Pittsburgh, PA, they played a plethora of music from their debut album to their newer albums (yes, they’re still releasing banger album after album - their 2014 album is one of their most popular ones!).
Thievery Corporation has a sound unmatched. I knew this as soon as I saw the various acoustic instruments on stage as well as a sitar. Though these instruments indicate a level of tranquility within the music, there were also undertones of vibrant soul and even a sense of rock.
Throughout their set, Thievery Corporation brought out different vocalists all of which were entertaining and brought a distinctive energy to the stage. Around the halfway point of the set, they slowed things down with an acoustic part. There was an even balance throughout their set and the crowd, I included, was thoroughly entertained. Speaking of, the vibes the crowd brought matched that of the band. It was incredible to see so many people enjoy the eclectic music performed that night.
Thievery Corporation will continue their tour throughout the United States as well as making a trip out to Europe in June and July. Their music is not the type that relies on knowing the songs in order to enjoy the performance. I, personally, knew little about the band going into their performance May 12 at the Roxian, however, I came out a fan!
